28mm Painted Hasslefree Miniature: Tetsuhara the Sumo

Going on annual leave from today until the beginning of May so my posting and commenting will be a bit hit and run but I'll be about as I'm not really going anywhere, going to be nice doing feck all.

Sumo (相撲, sumō?) is a competitive full-contact sport where a wrestler (rikishi) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyō) or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. The sport originated in Japan, the only country where it is practiced professionally. It is generally considered to be a gendai budō (a modern Japanese martial art), though this definition is incorrect as the sport has a history spanning many centuries. Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from the days when sumo was used in the Shinto religion. Life as a rikishi is highly regimented, with rules laid down by the Sumo Association. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal "sumo training stables" known in Japanese as heya where all aspects of their daily lives—from meals to their manner of dress—are dictated by strict tradition.

More information can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumo

Nice Sumo figure from their martial artists range, I own a few of them to add colour to my samurai period.

28mm Painted Hasslefree Miniatures: Hazmat Team

Painted 28mm Hazmat Team from Hasslefree Miniatures, you can see another (better) painted version on Vampifan's blog http://vampifansworldoftheundead.blogspot.com/2011/04/hasslefree-hazmat-troopers.html along with versions from Copplestones Castings and EM4 Miniatures. I think I was a bit heavy with the ink on these but they are lovely figures (if a little small) but we need more poses to go with them.

Size and scale pictures included.

28mm Painted Napoleon Bodyguard Mameluk Roustam Raza.

.....the only napoleonic figure (from Wargames Foundry) I own now from a previous foray into 28mm napoleonics and my favourite.

Napoleon formed his own Mamluk corps, the last known Mamluk force, in the early years of the 19th century, and used Mamluks in a number of his campaigns. Even his Imperial Guard had Mamluk soldiers during the Belgian campaign, including one of his personal servants. Napoleon's famous bodyguard Roustam Raza was a Mamluk who had been sold in Egypt.

Throughout the Napoleonic era there was a special Mamluk corps in the French army. In his history of the 13th Chasseurs Colonel Descaves recounts how Napoleon used the Mamluks in Egypt. In the so-called "Instructions" that Bonaparte gave to Kleber after departure, Napoleon wrote that he had already bought from Syrian merchants about 2,000 Mamluks with whom he intended to form a special detachment.

Roustam was born in Tbilisi, Georgia to Armenian parents. At thirteen Roustan was kidnapped and sold as a slave in Cairo. The Turks gave him the name Idzhahia. The sheikh of Cairo presented him to General Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798. Roustam served as a bodyguard of Napoleon until 1814, when he married Mademoiselle Douville in Dourdan, France and refused to follow the Emperor in his exile to Elba.On 7 December 1845, Roustam died in Dourdan.

28mm Painted Hasslefree Miniature: Beach Babe Libby.

........and no I don't know why I bought it.

28mm painted hasslefree miniature called Beach Babe Libby, it's not easy painting a tiny bikini, I justify the figure as a zombie lure or as a human version of the judas goat (leads the unwary into somewhere where they don't come out of again maybe).

Figure Painting, does it get easier or better?

..........or worse?

A friend of mine approached me a month ago with some figures he wanted me to paint (28mm wargames foundry ancient german warriors) because five years earlier I had painted hundreds of them for him and he now wanted to add another unit of 24 but painted the same way to match all the others I had done all those years ago.

To help he included some of the older figures I had done and when I looked at them I couldn't tell wether they were bad or good or how to copy the style but I painted them anyway in a vain hope to match them up.

What I'm trying to say is has your painting ability got better over the years of your figure painting or do we try to improve at all, I paint to a wargaming standard as I want to get figures done and move onto the next batch so I can get them on the table and game with them, the only thing that has changed over the years in my painting is washes and inks and my frequent use of them but I don't think my skill has.

A few years ago members of the Posties Rejects would gather every couple of months and paint another members figures for them in somebody's house and everybody got a turn and you could depending on scale get a lot of figures painted, I would give certain units of mine to a certain painter because they were quicker or a better painters but I hated this process because I wasn't that quick and really they only invited me because I cooked a certain pasta dish.

Last night I started painting 20mm for myself and I struggled but maybe I'm going blind in my old age aswell as I normally paint 28mm, well heres to winning the lottery and getting somebody to paint my figures, I wonder what Pamela Anderson is doing these days and what's her painting skill like ?

28mm Painted Pig Iron Miniatures Ferals.

................my  Tusken Raiders out of the desert wasteland, also known as the Bell's Palsy Bastards.

Painted these up in the first days of my Bell's Palsy (eye not moving and constantly watering but that's me being angry and stupid) and have never been that happy with the paint job, a bit too basic but looking at the pictures today they're not that bad, this is the complete range of poses, they're not bad sculpts at all but could do with some sitting and driving figures added to the range (hint, hint to the designer over at Pig Iron)), there are 19 figures painted (should be 20 but found  the on I had dropped and then drop kicked later and repainted the bare metal bits on him) so far and I have painted light and heavy dreadnoughts to be added plus vehicles all in a similar paint scheme.

Have added a scale picture to just to give an idead of scale with other figures.
