Students at Sherwood School are seeing red — mittens, that is.
The school recently took part in the Red Mitten Campaign to raise awareness about the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.
Seven classes at the school submitted art projects, done in both French and English, and received the red mittens as a reward.
The mittens are red and display the Olympic logo on the back and a white maple leaf on the palm.
The students displayed them proudly on Wednesday afternoon.
The Olympics were also discussed in the classroom as a way of educating the children about them.
The idea to participate in the campaign came after Kara Grant, two-time Olympian and daughter of Sherwood School principal Marion Grant, recently spoke to the students, said Anne Thomson, a physical education teacher at Sherwood School.
Grant made a point of reminding the students that she wasn’t any different than them, said Thomson.
“She said, ‘I’m just an ordinary person. I worked hard.’”
As well, the campaign hopes to inspire students who may have dreams of achieving something like the Olympics one day, she said.
