"It was a beautiful run that really showcased Summerside." - Scott Clark

Clark is currently preparing for the upcoming P.E.I. Marathon that happens in October.

"Sixteen kilometres (10 miles) is a good distance to get you ready," he said.

Clark has a personal goal of two hours 50 minutes for the P.E.I. Marathon.

Pizio-Perry also has the P.E.I. Marathon in the back of her mind. She said that if she gets a few more long-distance runs in over the next three weeks she would strongly consider attempting her first full marathon.

"I have a lot of work ahead of me," Pizio-Perry said with a smile.

MISCOUCHE -- Two new records were set at the Miscouche Firefighters 10-Mile Run here Saturday morning.

Twenty-seven-year-old Bear River native Stanley Chaisson, who now resides in Charlottetown, was the overall winner in 56 minutes 22 seconds (56:22). Jen Nicholson, 40, of Cornwall knocked almost 10 minutes off the previous-best female time. She stopped the clock in 1:02:25.

The previous course records were set by Paul Thibideau (57:40) in 2003 and Elaine Burkholder (1:12:16) in 2006.

MISCOUCHE -- It was a record-setting day at the Miscouche Firefighters 10-Mile Run on Saturday morning.
Bear River native Stanley Chaisson, who now resides in Charlottetown, and Jen Nicholson of Cornwall established new course records. Chaisson's time was 56 minutes 22 seconds (56:22), breaking Paul Thibideau's 57:40 standard set in 2003.
"I was pleased with my time and it was the first time I've done the course," said Chaisson. "I felt good."
Meanwhile, Nicholson, 40, knocked almost 10 minutes off the female record en route to finishing sixth overall. Her time of 1:02:25 shattered the previous mark of 1:12:16, which was set by Elaine Burkholder in 2006.
"We (Nicholson family) have a lot going on today (Saturday) and I woke up this morning and kind of decided at the last minute that I'd run it," said Nicholson. "I wasn't really planning on it, which was good because I didn't get too worked up or too nervous about it."
Nicholson said the wind didn't bother her too bad and the temperature was perfect for running.
"Someone said the wind is always a factor and they were calling for wind today," she said. "There were certain places it was a little gusty, but certainly not the whole race and I didn't feel it slowed me down or anything."
Personal bests
Overall, 15 personal records were achieved and awards were presented to the male and female runners with the most improved times.
John VanErkis, with an improvement of 11:57, took the male award and Lisa Doiron, who improved her time by 13:27, took the female honour. VanErkis finished 18th overall in 1:10:23 and Doiron was 30th in 1:18:48.
The 56-runner field didn't waste any time getting away.
"Mike MacKinnon led the way for the few K (kilometres) and it was a really fast start," said Chaisson. "It's a very deceiving course.
"It looks flat, but once you get out there it's rolling hills and the wind was tough today. It made it even more challenging."
The race started and finished at the fire department in Miscouche and featured an out-and-back course on Lady Slipper Drive and Belmont Road.
"It was a fun run," said Nicholson. "It wasn't too hilly and was kind of rolling, which is what I like."
With the Prince Edward Island Marathon on Oct. 18, this run served as a tune-up.
"What my training partner (Rob MacKenzie) and I did today was we built this race into our long run," explained Chaisson. "We did a few kilometres beforehand and now we're going to do a few kilometres after.
"It's perfect because it's a month away from the marathon and this race is a great way to gauge where you're at."

Runners brave rain to participate in run
The Guardian

Organizers for the 29th annual Terry Fox Run were pleased with the turnout for the event yesterday at Victoria Park in Charlottetown.
Athena Doyle, Charlottetown Terry Fox Run organizer, said the rain did play a factor in the number of participants for the event but she was impressed with the dedication shown by the over 100 people who took part.
"Our numbers were down because of the rain. The people that showed up to brave the rain are brave souls."
The event raised about $5,000 for Cancer research with more donations coming from those who could not make the event today.
As hard as it was with the weather, everyone who helped out and participated are much appreciated, Doyle said.
"They made the day worthwhile."
The proceedings started with a speech from Eric MacEwen, host of the Eric MacEwen Show on CFCY radio.
His words contributed greatly to the event and inspired those who attended, Doyle said.
"We really enjoyed him. He had a lot of positive words for us."
The 2010 Terry Fox Run, which is also the 30th anniversary of the event, is scheduled to take place on the Confederation Bridge.

Terry Fox run goes in city through efforts of one woman
MIKE CARSON
The Guardian

SUMMERSIDE – The legacy left by Terry Fox to find a cure for cancer wasn’t allowed to die this year in Summerside thanks to efforts of one woman and the support from within the community to keep that dream alive.
Linda A took on the challenge or organizing the Terry Fox run in Summerside after reading two weeks ago that no one was planning to stage the event this year. Fast footwork and with the support of local businesses such as Waterfront Mall, Sobey’s, Price Choppers, Superstore, the chief of police and dedicated volunteers, A was able to pull the event off. The numbers were far below those of past Terry Fox runs but given the time frame the response and the money raised made the event a success.
“The turnout I think, considering it was cancelled has been excellent,” A said prior to the start of Sunday’s run. “There’s been a good response. I’d like to see more numbers here right now but, considering the last minute notice, I’m really pleased.”
A said one of the volunteers and participants is nine-year-old Thomas Haslam from Springbrooke. Haslam collected $167 in pledges and was the first to donate his money to the Terry Fox Run.
Grace Haslam, Thomas’ mother, said participating in the Terry Fox Run has been a dream her son has had since he was four years old.
“This is a dream come true for him to participate in the Terry Fox Run,” she said. “He’s been waiting for five years.”
A said thirteen volunteers answered the call to help get the event organized and up and running.
“Everybody has been really supportive,” she said. “There haven’t been any negative comments at all. Business has supported us. I’ve got water that’s been donated by Sobey’s Price Chopper’s and the SuperStore. The chief of police (Dave Poirier) has been amazing. He’s been a great help. He’s got or (run) maps done for use, he’s taken care of the crossing guards.”
A was encouraged by the level of support that jumped on board in such a short time and she intends to keep the terry Fox Marathon for Hope alive until a cure for cancer is found.
“It’s the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope and the only time I want to see it as the last Terry Fox Marathon of Hope is when the cure is out there,” she said.
