KENSINGTON -- The 36th annual running of the Harvest Festival 25K Road Race takes place Saturday.
The race will begin on Route 225 in Stanchel at 9 a.m., and will finish in front of Community Gardens in Kensington. This is the longest-running foot road-racing event on P.E.I., and is also one of the most challenging courses in all of Eastern Canada.
Nicknamed the "Killer Course," the race attracted a record number of participants last year -- 66 -- and organizers are looking for another great turnout this year.
Mike MacKinnon of Miscouche was last year's overall winner. He finished in a very respectable time of one hour 32 minutes 22 seconds (1:32:22). Bear River native Stanley Chaisson set the new course record of 1:25:51 in 2007. That is a time that race director Ivan Gallant predicts will be tough to beat.
Jen Nicholson of Cornwall smashed the 26-year-old female record in 2008. She finished in 1:42:02, breaking the previous mark of 1:45:01 that was held by Jean Beairisto of Sarnia, Ont.
T-shirts will once again be presented to the first 60 runners to register. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third overall runners in both male and female categories, and the top 50-and-over runner with the best time. There will also be several prize draws for participants, including running shoes.
The Malpeque Bay Credit Union (T-shirts) and Kensington Lions Club (running shoes) are returning major sponsors. The race also receives strong support from several other businesses in the community.
