Eight gold come to P.E.I.

Oromocto, N.B. — Twenty-seven athletes represented P.E.I. at the recent Atlantic track and field championships in Oromocto, N.B., with numerous athletes taking home top three finishes.
In the boys under-11 category, Conor MacEachern won the 200-metre run in a time of 33.09. In the 400m, he placed second in 1:17.31, with younger brother Declan placing third in 1:26.12. Declan also placed third in the long jump in 3.25m.
In the boys 14-15 age group, Nicholas Tanton placed second in the high jump with a jump of 1.51m before winning the triple jump in 10.21m.
In the girls 16-17 category, Meghan Boswall placed second in the 100m and third in the 200m in times of 12.87 and 27.17 respectively. Lauren Hurry was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.03m.
In the boys 16-17 division, Spencer Smith easily claimed the 400m title in a time of 51.34. Nathan Comeau was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.56m. Cody Dawson also bettered his 2009 Provincial High School meet mark throwing the javelin a distance of 38.67 m to place third.
In the women’s (18+) age group, Kaitlin Richard was named Atlantic Champion in the hammer throw, bettering her own provincial record with a toss of 44.71m. Kelly MacDonald also set a new provincial record in the 800m, improving her own mark with a time of 2:17.18 and placing second. MacDonald took home another silver in the 1500m with a 4:48.31 performance.
Gina Lisi and Jocelyn Wichtel finished second and third in the 400m in respective times of 1:03.89 and 1:04.75.
The 2005 and 2006 Atlantic Champion Susan Sobey was third in the 100m in a time of 12.34 behind Nova Scotia’s Adrienne Power and Jenna Martin, who will both be running for Canada in the 4x400m relay at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Jennifer Bursey was third in the 400m hurdles in 1:07.92. The women’s 4x100m relay team of Susan, Stephanie and Kaitlyn Sobey and Meghan Boswall were second in a time of 50.42.
In the men’s (18+) division, Anthony Bernard and Kurt McCormack continue to be the dominate horizontal jumpers in the region. Bernard claimed the long-jump title with a jump of 6.63m while McCormack hop, stepped and jumped 13.84m to victory in the triple jump.
Matthew Caseley was named Atlantic Champion in the hammer throw, also improving his own provincial record to 57.53m. Connor McGuire was victorious in the 3000m run in a time of 9:22.21. Gerry MacAdam was third in the 100m in a time of 11.27.
The 4x100m relay team of Stewart MacLean, Spencer Smith, Anthony Bernard and Gerry MacAdam placed third in a time a 44.60. The 4x400m relay team of Spencer Smith, Anthony Bernard, Riley Merrill and Kurt McCormack placed second and set a new P.E.I. record in a time of 3:24.88.
This meet was a good warm-up for athletes heading into the Canada Summer Games in a couple of weeks and the 17 and under Youth National Championships this weekend in Sherbrooke, Que.
