Cycling P.E.I. receives national award

Cycling P.E.I. was presented with one of the national body’s most prestigious awards at the sport’s annual general meeting at the Rodd Hotel in Charlottetown recently.

Mark Bowlan, president of Cycling P.E.I., was presented with the Torchy Peden Award on behalf of the association for its recent outstanding growth in membership, efficiency in operations and administration and for its all-round development of the sport.

The award is named after one of Canada’s greatest cyclists from the early part of the 20th century, and is presented annually at the national meeting.

The award was recognition to Bowlan and the executive of Cycling P.E.I., which has made some wholesale changes in the sport the past few years. Areas of improvement have included more female athlete development, upgrades to the facilities at Brookvale, the creation of more downhill trails, adopting the Long Term Athlete Development Model for youth and adult riders, increased coach and official recruitment and training, and its advocacy work, including the promotion of bicycle safety, helmet use and more bike lanes.

The association was also praised for its outstanding website and online registration system, considered to be one of the best in the country.

In addition to the Torchy Peden Award, the association was also recognized with a special presentation for its hosting of the Canada Games event in August.

Cycling P.E.I., which was represented at the meeting by Bowlan and executive director Mike Connolly, also gave presentations on the best practices of website development and event hosting.
