Island Students and Teachers Showcase Their Olympic Spirit
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- More than 2,700 students and teachers from 28 Island schools are showcasing their Olympic spirit on the official education website for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.“Project Showcase,” an exciting program of www.vancouver2010.com/EDU, features student projects and activities related specifically to the Games or areas of sport, culture and sustainability. The program was launched to encourage young people to get involved and build the Olympic Spirit.
The PEI Olympic Spirit Committee issued a challenge to all Island teachers to submit projects to the Canadian School Portal before November 6 to qualify for Vancouver 2010 Red Mittens for their students.
“Project Showcase and the Red Mitten Campaign provided an opportunity for Island students to showcase their Olympic Spirit to a worldwide audience,” said Premier Ghiz. “We are extremely pleased that so many teachers and students participated in this program.”
PEI showcase projects range from a collection of “Torch Relay” posters designed by Grade 10 Visual Communication students at Colonel Gray Senior High School, to a “Living Inukshuk” to symbolize the spirit and culture of the Vancouver Olympics created by the students at Athena Consolidated in Summerside.
The PEI Olympic Spirit Committee is delivering 1,250 pairs of Vancouver 2010 Red Mittens to randomly selected participants this week.
“We hope that students will wear their new mittens when they come out to support our Torchbearers when the 2010 Olympic Torch comes to PEI November 21 to the 23,” said Ghiz.
Educators are encouraged to visit www.vancouver2010.com/EDU to access resources that connect existing curricula to the 2010 Winter Games and to view the creative projects showcased by students across Canada.
