Runners flock to P.E.I.
More than 1,800 runners and walkers from across North America, and a few from around the world, are in P.E.I. this weekend to take part in the annual marathon.
"It is a Boston qualifier … and that's pretty exciting that we are, because we have people coming this weekend from every province in Canada, from 12 states and internationally," said Myrtle Jenkins Smith, one of the organizers.
"And last year, we were one of the highest, in the eastern region, number of qualifiers for Boston," she said.
There are several events on Saturday, but the main marathon takes place on Sunday.
The course is a little more than 42 kilometres, from the P.E.I. National Park to Charlottetown.
There is also a half marathon and 5K and 10K races.
There will be some traffic tie-ups on Sunday as runners make their way through the course, including one-way traffic in the National Park for a few hours during the morning and several road closures in Charlottetown throughout the day.
